If you’re new to the game I would recommend against putting too much emphasis on your professions early in your game. When you get close to the end game levels, then you will start to look at the ins-and-outs of each profession and their advantages and disadvantages.
I have found that if you choose two farming professions (skinning, mining, herbalism etc), you’ll be able to put the fruits of your labours on the AH and supplement your income as you level. I say supplement as you will probably make more gold through pure questing /selling items to vendors (including some rewards) than you will through actively trying to make gold.
That said, there will be times when the AH goes absolutely nuts, and you will find that light leather scraps are selling for a well above average price, and that will be a good time to capitalise on it.
I chose skinning and leatherworking. As a rogue, I thought leatherworking would be a great way to make my own armour. It was for a few levels. Since then, quest reward gear and the AH provided me with far better gear and so I left it, focussing on skinning to sell items on the AH. I had my level 40 mount with plenty to spare. When I hit level 60, I spent almost all my gold on bringing my LW up to skill 300. This turned out to be a mistake as I had spent the majority of it with little to spare.
Questing in Outlands resulted in making up a good proportion of that gold again, but I still don’t have my 150 riding skill (level 60 mount skill).
Secondary Professions:
- Cooking – didn’t bother with it. Everyone else can cook so there’s always food in the AH.
- Fishing – didn’t bother with it. Everyone else can fish so there’s always fish in the AH. You don’t need to complete that fishing quest (but you could have a lot of fun with it).
- Lockpicking – Rogue only, is useful to have. I’m wishing I spent more time working on this skill as I was levelling up.
- First Aid – most classes can’t live without it. This is especially true of leather and cloth wearers. It will save clothies mana, and leatherworkers: if you’re in a group, cloth wearers will thank you for not having to mana up all the time.
Primary Professions:
- Alchemy – didn’t bother
- Blacksmithing – didn’t bother
- Enchanting – didn’t bother
- Engineering – played it on a troll rogue, and found it to not be useful
- Herbalism – didn’t bother, but wishing I had. Reagents are everywhere!
- Jewelcrafting – didn’t bother.
- Leatherworking – right now, I wish I didn’t bother with it.
- Mining – didn’t bother with it, I see a few deposits here and there but I’m glad I didn’t worry about it, I don’t think I would have made that much money.
- Tailoring – didn’t bother with it – afterall I’m a leather wearer!
- Skinning – Wow, this is the best primary profession ever. If you want matts to sell, just go out and kill stuff. Things you can’t skin: birds, elementals and humans. Almost everything in STV and Barrens is skinnable.
